Mussels offer a number of health benefits, including Omega 3 fatty acids, Vitamin B12, zinc and iron. Thankfully, my family (including my young children) LOVE mussels, often asking to order mussel pots at restaurants. It has become one of our go-to starters at restaurants like Waterzooi on Long Island! On days when I do not feel like paying big bucks for mussel pots, I make them at home. Believe it or not, a 2lb bag of fresh black mussels cost just $2.99-$3.99 at the local supermarket by me. While washing them takes time and diligence, homemade mussels are SO worth it because you can make an entire batch (following my recipe below) for just $4-$5!! Why do I sound like an accountant?

The downside of homemade mussels is the work that is involved in cleaning them. It is absolutely critical to apply diligence when cleaning mussels because you don’t want to turn off diners (or yourself) with sandy seafood, or a rancid, bad mussel that may ruin the entire pot. Yup, that’s all it takes! I will cover written instructions to cleaning mussels in a separate post. In the meantime, check out my video below to learn how to clean mussels and steam them in a white wine garlic butter sauce. This is my go-to recipe when preparing mussels at home. Although cleaning them can be a b*tch, cooking them is a breeze and requires just several minutes of active cooking time! Make sure you pair the dish with some crusty bread or toasted baguette because you’re gonna want to soak up that delicious broth!

Ingredients
- 1.5 – 2 lbs black mussels
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 4 cloves garlic minced
- 2 shallots chopped
- 3/4 cup cooking white wine
- ⅛ tsp salt or to taste
- dash of black pepper or to taste
- 3 tbsp room temperature unsalted butter
- handful parsley roughly chopped
- crusty bread/toasted baguette
- Parmesan cheese optional
- Lemon wedges optional
Instructions
- Discard any dead/cracked mussels. Debeard the mussels and clean them by scrubbing their shells with a brush and soaking in cool water for 15 minutes to expel any sand. When mussels are clean, drain and set aside.
- On medium heat, heat olive oil in a skillet or pan, swirling to coat evenly.
- Add minced garlic and chopped shallots and stir for 30 seconds.
- Pour in the cooking white wine, then add salt and pepper. Mix until all ingredients are well combined.
- Turn heat to medium-high, then add the cleaned mussels. Cover the pan with a lid, then steam for 4 minutes.
- After 4 minutes, remove the lid, then turn the fire back down to medium. Add the unsalted butter and stir until it is completely melted.
- Top with chopped parsley and/or optional parmesan cheese & lemon juice.
- Pair with some crusty bread or toasted baguette. Enjoy!
