I was born and raised in New York City. I live and breathe New York, despite its odor. It’s my home and where my heart resides, now and always, no matter how dirty and stinky the subways and city streets are. New York is where many foods were popularized; we have New York style pizza, New York style cheesecake, Manhattan clam chowder, pastrami, etcetera, etcetera!! Can’t forget the New York style bagel, a perfect breakfast item with cream cheese, butter, or to sandwich some bacon, eggs and cheese (or my FAVORITE lox and cream cheese)! Nom nom! When Steve said he was in the mood for some bagels, I said “Great! I’ve been meaning to try baking them!” Here are the details to the recipe I used and my YouTube video.
RECIPE RECAP:
Recipe Used: New York-Style Bagel by Sophisticated Gourmet |
Prep + Cook Time: 2 Hours |
Ingredients: Bread flour, yeast, sugar, salt, warm water and toppings (optional) |
Adjustments Made: I used half the dough for sesame bagels and the other half for cinnamon raisin bagels, the latter of which I added 1/2 tsp of cinnamon and a small box of raisins. Rather than kneading the dough in my mixer for 5-6 minutes, I did it for 10 minutes. |
My Execution: Check out my YouTube video below to see me in action! |
Thoughts: I can’t emphasize how much I love this recipe. Bagels are easily accessible, whether in New York City or the suburbs, but to bake them from scratch at home and have them come out of your oven tasting like they came from a bagel shop feels pretty accomplishing. The one thing I may experiment with the next time I bake these again is the temperature setting for my oven. I followed the recipe and baked my bagels at 425°F, but may try 400°F the whole way through, as my bagels came out pretty brown and toasty. I did enjoy them very much as is, but would like to see how a slightly lower temperature will impact the exterior. |
MY DISH RATING:
We spread a good amount of cream cheese onto these freshly baked bagels, STRAIGHT OUT OF THE OVEN, and devoured them! Steve was left speechless as he enjoyed the toasty crust and warm and soft interior with his eyes closed. The only thing I heard from him was “Mmm…. mmm….” which melted my heart faster than the cream cheese melted between our hot bagels. He rated my bagel 4.8 out of 5 stars and consumed TWO! YES, TWO WHOLE BAGELS IN ONE SITTING! My daughter ate an entire half of a cinnamon raisin bagel, which I was happy about since I was afraid my random measurements would screw up the flavors. I would highly recommend this recipe and was one happy camper.
